D.C. to end academic year early

Mayor Muriel Bowser said today that Washington, D.C.'s academic year will end late next month, as schools around the country adjust their schedules due to the pandemic.

School buildings will now remain closed through the end of the academic year, Latest Washington News and distance learning will end on May 29, Bowser said at a press briefing. Charter schools will close at around the same time. The academic year was originally scheduled through June 19.



The District's Office of the State Superintendent is waiving a rule requiring 180 days of instruction for all students, Press Release Distribution Service as well as community service requirements and "seat-time" requirements needed for a high school degree, according to the briefing.


To support distance learning, D.C. Public Schools said they're still in the process of distributing 16,000 devices and 5,000 hot spots.
